Malaysia-based Abnormal Studios is set to present a Phnom Penh-set remake of the 2010 South Korean melodrama “Wedding Dress” as a flagship title at the upcoming Asian Contents & Film Market in Busan. The company will be offering the film for sale ahead of its anticipated local release, showcasing a contemporary adaptation of the poignant mother-daughter narrative.
The Chenab Times has learned that the Cambodian version centers on Dalin, a single mother who is a talented bridal designer. The story delves into her life as she navigates single parenthood and her career, echoing the emotional core of the original film while grounding the narrative in a new cultural and geographic setting.
Kwon Hyung-jin’s original “Wedding Dress,” released in 2010, explored the complex relationship between a mother battling a terminal illness and her young daughter, as well as the mother’s efforts to find a new father figure for her child before her passing. The film was noted for its emotional depth and exploration of familial bonds under duress.
Abnormal Studios, known for its presence in the Southeast Asian film market, aims to leverage the familiar themes of the original “Wedding Dress” to attract international buyers and distributors through the Busan market. The Asian Contents & Film Market is a key platform for industry professionals to discover new projects, forge partnerships, and engage in co-production and sales opportunities within the vibrant Asian film industry.
The selection of this remake highlights the continued interest in adapting successful international narratives for local audiences, a strategy that has seen growing traction across various global film territories. The specific details regarding the Cambodian cast, director, and production timeline for the remake were not immediately available, but its inclusion on Abnormal Studios’ slate signifies its readiness for market engagement.
