Two individuals sustained gunshot wounds early Thursday morning when three assailants on a motorcycle allegedly opened fire on a car in Ludhiana, Punjab, in what police suspect was an attempted robbery. The incident occurred near the Jalandhar Bypass, close to Tiger Safari, around 4 am.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the car was carrying four occupants, including the driver, when the armed assailants approached and fired multiple rounds. The bullets penetrated the vehicle, striking Jaspal Jassa and Priya, an 18-year-old.
Jaspal Jassa was seated in the front passenger seat, while Priya and Jaspal’s uncle were in the rear. The driver and Jaspal’s uncle were unharmed in the attack. The occupants of the vehicle are reportedly from Ferozepur and reside in the Salem Tabri area of Ludhiana.
Following the shooting, the injured were swiftly transported to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for immediate medical attention. They are currently undergoing treatment for their injuries. The motive behind the firing is believed to be a robbery attempt, according to police preliminary assessments.
The Station House Officer (SHO) Jasvir Singh confirmed that a case has been registered against three unidentified individuals who were reportedly riding a motorcycle at the time of the incident. The police have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the suspects involved in the armed assault.
The attack underscores a growing concern regarding criminal activities in and around the city’s bypass areas, often targeted due to their relatively lower surveillance and late-night traffic. The nature of the assault, involving direct firing at a moving vehicle, suggests a level of boldness and potential premeditation by the perpetrators. Authorities are reportedly reviewing surveillance footage from the vicinity and gathering witness testimonies to aid in their investigation.
The incident has prompted discussions among local residents about safety and security, particularly during nighttime hours. The police have appealed to the public for any information that could assist in the ongoing hunt for the assailants. Investigations are ongoing to determine if the suspects have a prior record of such offenses or if this incident is linked to any larger criminal network operating in the region.
