SRINAGAR: A 36-year-old Jammu and Kashmir police constable has died after sustaining critical injuries in an accidental firearm incident in Shopian district, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the constable, a resident of Noorpora in Shopian, was injured on Sunday. He was initially taken to the Army Base Hospital in Shopian and subsequently referred to SKIMS Soura for advanced medical care.
The incident occurred when a colleague accidentally discharged a firearm during duty, resulting in a gunshot wound to the right side of the constable’s abdomen. Despite prompt medical attention and admission to the Critical Care Unit (CCU) at SKIMS Soura, the constable succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accidental discharge of the firearm. The probe aims to ascertain the sequence of events that led to the incident. The loss of the constable has cast a somber mood among his colleagues and the local community.
Shopian district, located in the southern part of the Kashmir Valley, has been a focal point for security operations. Incidents involving accidental discharges, though rare, underscore the inherent risks faced by security personnel during their duties. The investigation is expected to provide a detailed account of the events and any contributing factors.
