Shimla police have apprehended 27 interstate drug trafficking kingpins, main suppliers, and key operators based on backward linkages over the past three and a half months, marking the highest number of such arrests in the last five years.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating a significant surge in law enforcement action against drug networks operating beyond state borders. In the corresponding period of 2025, the district police had arrested nine individuals involved in such activities, while in 2024, only four accused were taken into custody. This year, the Shimla district police have intensified their efforts, targeting drug trafficking networks that originate from outside Himachal Pradesh.
Increased Enforcement Against Drug Networks
According to a spokesperson for the Himachal Pradesh Police, since January 1, 2026, the district police have been rigorously pursuing drug trafficking rings that extend their operations from other states. The number of arrests this year is nearly three times higher than in the same period of 2025 and approximately seven times greater than in 2024. This intensified crackdown reflects a concerted effort to dismantle the supply chains that fuel drug abuse within the region.
The spokesperson further detailed that as of now in 2026, 19 major drug trafficking networks that operated from various states and regions including Nepal, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh have been successfully dismantled. In contrast, action was taken against only four such networks in 2025 and a mere one in 2024, underscoring the escalating focus and success of the police in combating interstate drug smuggling.
Major Drug Seizures and Network Busts
The police have reported several significant drug seizures this year. In one high-profile operation, Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) valued at Rs 1 crore was confiscated. This bust led to the arrest of approximately seven individuals involved in the network, including four police personnel. The involvement of law enforcement officers in such illicit activities highlights the deep-rooted nature of the drug trade and the challenges faced by authorities.
Another notable operation involved the dismantling of an illicit drug trafficking network based in Ambala, Haryana. During this raid, around 288 grams of heroin were seized. In a separate coordinated effort, four nationals from Nepal were arrested with approximately 11.5 kilograms of opium. These seizures indicate the scale and reach of the drug trafficking operations being targeted by the Shimla police.
The police also succeeded in arresting the purported main leader of the Shahi Mahatma Gang, an individual who had been evading law enforcement for a year and a half. The apprehension of such key figures is considered crucial in disrupting the hierarchical structure of drug trafficking organizations and curbing their operational capacity.
Broader Context of Drug Trafficking in the Region
The increased number of arrests and dismantled networks in Shimla come at a time when drug trafficking remains a significant concern across many parts of India. Interstate drug smuggling often involves sophisticated networks that exploit porous borders and transportation routes to distribute narcotics. The involvement of individuals from neighbouring states and even foreign nationals underscores the transnational nature of this illegal trade.
Law enforcement agencies in India have been stepping up their efforts to combat drug trafficking, employing intelligence-led operations and inter-agency coordination. The focus on backward linkages aims to not only apprehend street-level dealers but also to identify and apprehend the main suppliers and kingpins who orchestrate these operations. The use of technology and robust investigation techniques is becoming increasingly important in tracing the flow of drugs and money involved in this trade.
The seizure of drugs like LSD and heroin, alongside larger quantities of opium, indicates the diverse range of narcotics being trafficked into and through the region. Authorities often face the challenge of adapting their strategies to counter evolving methods and substances used by drug traffickers. The arrests of police personnel in the LSD case also point towards the need for internal vigilance and accountability within law enforcement to prevent any compromise in the fight against crime.
The success of the Shimla police in making these arrests signifies a proactive approach to tackling drug trafficking. The highest number of kingpin arrests in five years suggests that the current strategies are yielding results, contributing to efforts to curb drug abuse and related crimes in Himachal Pradesh and beyond. The ongoing efforts aim to choke the supply of illicit substances and bring perpetrators to justice.
