SRINAGAR: The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has quashed the Public Safety Act (PSA) detention of Mehraj Malik, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Doda.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the court allowed the habeas corpus petition filed on behalf of the legislator. Malik, who represents the Doda Assembly constituency, had been under preventive detention since September 8, 2025.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the detention order was issued under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act, 1978, following an incident involving a confrontation with a district official in Doda. Malik is the lone AAP legislator in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.
The development comes after arguments in the case were concluded earlier, with the judgment reserved in February 2026. Reports on social media platforms and local updates indicate the order was passed on April 27, 2026.
Malik, a resident of the Chenab region, was elected as MLA from Doda in the October 2024 Assembly elections. He has been lodged in Kathua jail. Sources familiar with the matter said he is expected to be released soon following the quashing of the PSA.
