In a significant safety initiative, a stretch of National Highway 44 passing through the Thoppur Ghat Road in Tamil Nadu has been painted with red markings in patches, marking the first time such a measure has been implemented in the state. The initiative aims to enhance visibility and improve vehicle stability, thereby reducing accidents on this accident-prone section.
Addressing a Hazardous Stretch
The Thoppur Ghat Road, which connects Coimbatore and Salem to Krishnagiri and Bengaluru, has been a cause for concern due to a high number of fatalities and accidents. Over the past three years, the stretch has witnessed more than 200 fatalities, and in the last decade, approximately 260 lives have been lost with 1,500 accidents recorded. The steep gradients and sharp curves, particularly between Dharmapuri and Salem, passing through the Thoppur and Barigam reserve forests, contribute to the hazardous nature of the road. An estimated 60,000 to 70,000 vehicles traverse this road daily.
Innovative Road Markings
Two stretches of NH 44, each measuring 300 metres, have been painted red in patches of 2 meters by 3 meters using thermoplastic paint. Sources within the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) indicated that these markings are designed to increase driver alertness and improve visibility, especially during challenging driving conditions. This experimental approach draws inspiration from similar initiatives abroad and aims to create a more secure driving environment.
Broader Safety Measures and Infrastructure Development
This red marking initiative is part of a larger effort by the NHAI to bolster road safety across its network. Previously, the NHAI has implemented various measures to combat reduced visibility, particularly during foggy conditions. These include the reinstallation of road signs, repair of faded pavement markings, and the use of reflective markers and stickers on safety devices. Furthermore, the NHAI is undertaking a major infrastructure project to construct an elevated corridor spanning 3.68 km at a cost of ₹905 crore. This project, aimed at providing a permanent solution to the accident-prone nature of the Thoppur Ghat section, is currently on schedule for completion in March 2028.
The NHAI’s approach to road safety encompasses both immediate engineering solutions, such as the new red markings and ongoing infrastructure development, and awareness campaigns. Such measures are crucial for ensuring the safety of the significant volume of traffic that utilizes these vital national highways, and for mitigating the risks associated with a notoriously dangerous stretch of road.
