Delhi LG Seeks Plans for Dwarka, Narela, Rohini Sub-cities as Investment Hubs

The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, has directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to formulate comprehensive plans aimed at transforming the sub-cities of Dwarka, Narela, and Rohini into prime investment destinations.

The Chenab Times has learned that the initiative focuses on attracting information technology (IT), IT-enabled Services (ITeS), healthcare, global capacity centers, and digital infrastructure industries to these areas. The overarching goal is to foster significant investment, create employment opportunities, and boost revenue, aligning with sustainable urban development principles.

Dwarka sub-city, already developed by the DDA, is being positioned as a key international and domestic investment hub for the national capital, particularly for IT, ITeS, and digital infrastructure sectors. Similar ambitious plans are underway for Rohini and Narela.

Developing Decentralized Economic Hubs

During a recent meeting with DDA officials, Lt Governor Sandhu, who also chairs the DDA, discussed the specific modalities required to implement developmental initiatives that could bring about transformative changes across these three sub-cities. He urged the DDA to expedite the process of developing a concrete action plan, in close consultation with all relevant stakeholders, regarding future projects and strategies for these areas.

The Lieutenant Governor specifically requested a comprehensive and time-bound plan to be presented for his review. He advised DDA officers to explore the potential of attracting non-polluting industries, such as IT, ITeS, healthcare, and digital infrastructure, for establishing their operations and offices. The vision includes developing these areas as hubs for data centers, semiconductor plants, and warehousing, in accordance with the provisions of the Master Plan for Delhi.

Mr. Sandhu emphasized that such a strategic transformation would not only introduce much-needed investment opportunities but also serve as a catalyst for job creation and revenue generation, thereby contributing to sustainable city development. The presence of enhanced connectivity to the main city center, proximity to the airport, expanding road networks, and the operationalization of the Urban Extension Road are considered significant advantages.

Leveraging Infrastructure and Policy

Further strengthening the potential of these sub-cities are the extensive Metro line networks and the implementation of the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) policy. The ongoing development of education hubs and the evolution of these areas into major residential zones are also key factors that make them suitable for development as decentralized economic hubs, Lt Governor Sandhu informed the officials.

The DDA is expected to present detailed proposals outlining how these sub-cities can be developed to attract the targeted industries. The plans will likely include infrastructure upgrades, potential incentives, and strategies for land allocation and development. The emphasis on non-polluting industries aligns with the broader environmental and sustainability goals for the National Capital Region.

The development of Dwarka, Rohini, and Narela as economic hubs is part of a larger vision to decongest central Delhi and create more balanced urban growth. By developing these peripheral areas into self-sustaining economic centers, the administration aims to improve the quality of life for residents and enhance the overall economic dynamism of the city.

This initiative is expected to involve substantial investment in infrastructure, including power supply, water, and telecommunications, to meet the demands of advanced industries. The DDA will likely collaborate with private developers and industry associations to ensure that the development is aligned with market needs and technological advancements.
