In a significant development in the Bengaluru daycare abuse case, the prime accused, Manjula, has been granted anticipatory bail by a Bengaluru court. Manjula, a caregiver and supervisor at a daycare centre located on the Capgemini campus, had been absconding since a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against her.
The FIR was initially filed following a call made to the child helpline, 1098. The case involves allegations of cruelty towards children, and Manjula was named as Accused No. 1. Information was available with The Chenab Times that the HAL police are now awaiting her appearance for bail formalities, after which she will be questioned. Investigators are also examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged leakage of video footage that brought the incident to light, including whether it was circulated with any ulterior motive.
Manjula faces charges under Section 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, pertaining to assault or the use of criminal force, and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, which addresses cruelty to children by individuals in charge of their care. Both offences carry a maximum penalty of up to three years imprisonment.
The incident came to light through video evidence that surfaced online, showing alleged abuse of toddlers. The alleged acts reportedly included placing children inside a washing machine, spraying them with water, and locking them in toilets. Several other nannies employed at the daycare centre have also been arrested in connection with the case.
The case has drawn widespread attention and condemnation, prompting calls for stricter regulations and oversight of daycare facilities. Karnataka’s Home Minister, Priyank Kharge, had termed the alleged assault “absolutely unacceptable” and stated that such actions would not be tolerated, emphasizing that daycare centers must adhere to prescribed guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) has also begun reviewing the incident and daycare safety protocols in the state. The investigation into the case is ongoing, with authorities working to gather all relevant evidence and ensure accountability.
