SRINAGAR: Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have initiated a significant cleanliness drive at Brenwar, a popular tourist destination in Haijin, to combat the growing environmental degradation caused by increased visitor footfall. The initiative, a collaborative effort involving the Forest Department, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Chadoora, activists, local stakeholders, and volunteers, aims to preserve the fragile natural beauty of the area.
Environmental Concerns Mount at Brenwar
Brenwar in Haijin has seen a surge in popularity as a tourist spot, attracting thousands of visitors, especially during the summer months. However, this rise in tourism has regrettably led to a noticeable increase in environmental pollution. Social media platforms have been inundated with images and videos showcasing discarded plastic bottles, polythene bags, food wrappers, and other waste, raising alarm bells over the preservation of Brenwar’s pristine natural environment.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the accumulation of waste posed a significant threat to the ecological balance of the region. In response to these pressing concerns, a comprehensive cleanliness drive was organized.
Collaborative Efforts for a Cleaner Destination
The Forest Department, in conjunction with the DLSA Chadoora, actively engaged RTI activists, pony owners, media personnel, and local volunteers for the large-scale operation. Forest officials worked shoulder-to-shoulder with pony owners and volunteers, diligently clearing the scenic landscape of accumulated plastic waste. This joint effort underscored a shared commitment to preventing further environmental damage to the picturesque destination.
The initiative also served as a crucial reminder of the ongoing appeals from authorities across Jammu and Kashmir urging tourists to adhere to waste management guidelines. Visitors are consistently encouraged to minimize the use of single-use plastics and to dispose of their waste responsibly while exploring the region’s natural attractions.
Enforcement Measures and Collective Responsibility
Speaking at the conclusion of the drive, Range Officer Rameez Raja emphasized the success of the collaborative effort. “Today, we conducted this massive cleanliness drive in which people from different walks of life in Haijin participated. This effort has shown how, together, we can protect our natural environment and save it from degradation,” Raja stated. He also issued a stern warning, announcing that from this day forward, anyone found violating prescribed waste management guidelines would be subject to fines, with the possibility of further legal action.
Raja further highlighted the concept of collective ownership and responsibility, stating that Brenwar belongs to everyone. He stressed that safeguarding and preserving the destination is a shared duty for all residents and visitors alike.
Appeals for Sustainable Tourism Practices
The volunteers collected substantial quantities of garbage, reflecting the scale of the littering problem. The drive garnered widespread appreciation from the local community, who commended the Forest Department, the district administration, and all the participants for their dedicated efforts. Many participants expressed the need for similar awareness and cleanliness drives to be conducted at other tourist sites across Jammu and Kashmir to protect the region’s rich natural heritage.
Authorities also extended their appeals to shopkeepers operating in the vicinity of Brenwar. They were urged to transition to environmentally friendly packaging materials, such as biodegradable paper-based alternatives, and to actively encourage customers to carry their waste back with them for responsible disposal, thereby contributing to the overall preservation of the tourist spot.
