Delhi Schools Alerted to Enhance Flu Prevention Amid Rising Influenza, H1N1 Concerns

The Delhi Directorate of Education (DoE) has issued a directive to all government, government-aided, and private unaided recognised schools across the capital, urging them to intensify awareness and preventive measures against seasonal influenza and swine flu (H1N1). The advisory emphasizes respiratory hygiene and prompt action to mitigate potential outbreaks among students and staff.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the directive originates from the Directorate’s School Branch (Health) and is a response to a public health advisory issued by the Delhi State Health Mission. Schools are instructed to adopt a ‘Healthy School – Healthy Community’ strategy to bolster defenses against the spread of respiratory infections.

Officials have outlined common symptoms associated with seasonal influenza and H1N1, which include a sore throat, cough, breathing difficulties, body aches, headaches, fatigue, chills, and fever. However, the Directorate has stressed that there is “no need for undue alarm,” pointing out that timely awareness and diligent adherence to preventive practices are key to containing the spread of these illnesses.

To curb transmission within school environments, institutions have been advised to ensure that students and staff practice proper etiquette when coughing or sneezing, such as covering their nose and mouth and disposing of used tissues responsibly. Frequent handwashing with soap and water, especially before meals and after coughing or sneezing, has been strongly recommended as a fundamental preventive measure.

As part of broader infection control protocols, schools are to encourage maintaining physical distance from individuals exhibiting respiratory symptoms. The use of masks has been suggested where deemed necessary. The advisory also highlights the importance of maintaining good ventilation in classrooms and common areas, alongside regular cleaning of frequently touched surfaces, including desks, doorknobs, and shared equipment.

Schools are further directed to discourage spitting on school premises and in public areas, promoting instead healthy habits such as ensuring adequate hydration, consuming nutritious food, obtaining sufficient rest, and maintaining personal hygiene. Students and staff have been advised to consciously avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth, as these are common entry points for viruses.

The Directorate has issued a specific caution against self-medication, particularly emphasizing that antibiotics and other prescription medicines should not be taken without consulting a healthcare professional. This measure aims to prevent the misuse of antibiotics and ensure appropriate medical treatment for any illness.

To ensure widespread dissemination of the information, schools are mandated to share the advisory through various communication channels. These include morning assemblies, classroom discussions, notice boards, parent-teacher communication platforms, and digital media. The aim is to create a well-informed school community that is equipped to take proactive steps.

The circular reiterates the importance of vigilance with the statement, “A small precaution today can prevent a larger health concern tomorrow.”

District and zonal Deputy Directors of Education have been tasked with monitoring the implementation of these directives. They are required to submit consolidated reports detailing compliance to the Directorate by August 31. This oversight mechanism is intended to ensure that all schools actively engage in the preventive measures.

Ashish Sood, addressing concerns, stated, “There is no need for panic. There is no emergency situation in Delhi or in the country. Seasonal illnesses, including influenza, are seen during this period of the year. Our focus is on preparedness, awareness and timely preventive action. I urge citizens to remain calm, vigilant and follow the health advisory issued by the authorities.” His remarks aimed to reassure the public while underscoring the importance of the issued guidelines.
