The Delhi government has launched a significant initiative to create a comprehensive digital database of the city’s road network and associated infrastructure. This project, spearheaded by the Public Works Department (PWD), aims to provide authorities with an accurate, centralized, and GIS-based inventory to enhance the planning, maintenance, and overall management of road infrastructure across the capital.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the Geospatial Delhi Limited (GSDL), a government undertaking responsible for data collection and maintenance, has developed a digital platform named the Road Asset Updating System (RAUS). This system allows various road-owning agencies in Delhi to upload, verify, and regularly update information pertaining to individual road stretches.
The RAUS platform captures detailed geographical information along with critical physical and infrastructure-related attributes of each road. The database is designed to include 18 mandatory attributes for every road segment. These encompass road classification, precise start and end points, geographical coordinates, number of lanes, surface type, width of the road, and the specific agency responsible for its upkeep. Furthermore, the system meticulously records associated infrastructure and facilities, such as medians, parking areas, stormwater drains, cycle tracks, zebra crossings, speed breakers, and streetlight poles.
Officials have indicated that by consolidating this wealth of information onto a single GIS-based platform, authorities will gain a far more holistic understanding of the road assets throughout Delhi. This integrated approach is expected to revolutionize how road infrastructure is managed, moving beyond fragmented data to a unified, intelligent system.
In line with this objective, the PWD issued an order on September 10, directing its various divisions to upload details of any road stretches not yet included in the database. To ensure the smooth execution of this crucial task, the department has established a dedicated GIS Cell. A GSDL official will be providing on-ground assistance to PWD personnel for updating and verifying these records. The exercise is scheduled to be carried out across different divisions from September 14 to October 1.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to build a more accurate digital inventory of Delhi’s road network and its associated assets. The data compiled will be instrumental for various agencies in their strategic planning, maintenance scheduling, and efficient management of road infrastructure. The move is expected to lead to better urban planning, improved traffic management, and enhanced public services related to road networks.
