Kyiv, Ukraine – A series of Ukrainian drone attacks targeted the Moscow region and its oil refinery overnight, resulting in casualties and damage, according to Russian authorities. The attacks, described as among the largest on Russian soil in the protracted conflict, occurred as Russia concluded its parliamentary elections.
Authorities reported that two people died in the Moscow region. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that over 1,600 drones were launched towards Russia over the weekend, with 450 directed at the capital, though he claimed the majority were intercepted. Several drones reportedly reached the Moscow Oil Refinery, causing damage and igniting fires. Witnesses described hearing explosions and seeing plumes of smoke emanating from the facility. The full extent of the damage to the refinery, a key supplier of fuel to the region, remains unclear.
The Moscow refinery, operated by Gazprom Neft, has been a recurrent target for Ukrainian drone strikes. This latest incident follows previous attacks that have disrupted significant portions of Russia’s oil refining capacity, contributing to fuel shortages and price increases across the country. In 2024, the plant processed approximately 11.6 million metric tons of crude oil, producing substantial amounts of gasoline and diesel fuel.
Mayor Sobyanin accused Ukraine of planning the “unprecedented attack” with the aim of disrupting the ongoing elections, a claim that Kyiv has not officially commented on. He asserted that the adversary failed to achieve this objective. In the wider Moscow region, approximately 400 people, including 70 children, were evacuated from a residential building in Ramenskoye following the drone attacks.
These strikes underscore a significant escalation in Ukraine’s efforts to target Russia’s energy infrastructure. Ukrainian strikes have increasingly focused on refineries and fuel depots, aiming to disrupt fuel supplies and undermine Russia’s economic stability, a major source of revenue for the Kremlin. In a separate incident, Ukrainian monitoring channels reported that a military airfield in Rostov-on-Don and an oil refinery in Yaroslavl were also damaged during an overnight drone attack. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) later confirmed its involvement in striking aircraft and helicopters at the Rostov-Tsentralny military airfield. These broader strikes on energy and military infrastructure indicate a coordinated effort by Ukraine to degrade Russia’s capabilities and disrupt its war economy.
