Around 18 Assembly seats out of 90 total seats for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes might be reserve by delimitation commision in Jammu and Kashmir union territory after assessing the constituencies examining the maximum population of two communities. However, in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, there was only seven seats reserved for SCs while there wad no reservation for STs. This will be the first time that STs will get reservation for the first time in assembly.

18 Assembly seats reserved for SCs and STs in J&K?
As per reports, the delimitation commision has already set the process in motion for delimitation of 90 assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir which could reserve 18 seats for SCs and STs leaving 72 constituencies Open.
“A final call on how much seats the Delimitation commision will reserve in first Assembly of UT will be taken after taking several criterion into consideration including population of two communities”, CT reads in an Excelsior report.
The report also indicates that at least 11 seats could be reserved for Scheduled Tribes and seven for Scheduled Castes. While SCs already enjoyed the reservation in erstwhile state assembly with seven seats in Jammu region, this will be for the first time that the Scheduled Tribes will get reservation in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.
It is pertinent to mention that the Scheduled Tribes have political reservation in majority of states but J&K had denied reservation to them in the legislative assembly. It’s populated assembly segments mostly falls in Kashmir division besides Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu region.
Elections to the Legislative Assembly will be held only after delimitation of Assembly constituencies is completed.
There can be altogether different Assembly constituencies with different boundaries as it will not be binding on the Delimitation Commission to stick to the segments, which existed in erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir State Assembly, the report says.
