Weatherman predicts flash floods in J&K

Forecasts fresh wet spell from 19 to 21 July

In the midst of sweltering temperatures across the Valley, a local weatherman has warned of flash floods in Jammu and Kashmir as a result of a new wet spell expected to begin on July 19.

Lower and middle level tropospheric winds from the north Arabian Sea are most likely to interact with Easterly Winds (from the Bay of Bengal) from July 19 to 21, according to a weather warning issued by the Meteorological Department, a copy of which Chenab Times also possess.

From the 19th to the 21st, the system is expected to bring widespread heavy to very heavy rain, thunder, and lightning to most places in Jammu, primarily in the Pirpanjal Range and plains of Jammu division, and moderate to heavy rain, thunder, and lightning to many places in Kashmir division.

“Probable impacts due to recent wet spell include moderate to high risk of flash flood in J&K, temporary disruption of surface traffic primarily on Jammu-Srinagar, Srinagar-Leh, Doda-Kishtwar, Mughal Road from July 19th to 21st, 2021, landslides and shooting stones at vulnerable places, water logging and minor floods over low lying areas, and suspension of agricultural and horticultural operations during this period,” says.
