The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (BOSE) has announced a 30% reduction in the syllabus for the yearly regular-2021 examinations for students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades, and a 40% reduction for private students.
The J&K Board of School Education issued an official order in this regard, which stated, “In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, students appearing in the upcoming Annual (Regular) Examinations of 2020-21 of classes 10th, 11th, and 12th of Kashmir Division/Winter Zone areas of Jammu Division and UT of Ladakh, and Annual (Regular) Examination 2021-22 in Summer Zone areas of Jammu Division, are advised to take precautions.” The question papers will be made up of material from the full session’s syllabus.
“However, instead of attempting all of the questions, students will be required to attempt questions with a weighted average of 70%; grades achieved by students who attempt less than 70% of the questions will be raised proportionately.”
According to the directive, the question paper for topics with no practical course should be 100 marks, and the student should attempt questions worth a total of 70 marks. However, in subjects with both theoretical and practical components, the concession will only apply to the theoretical portion.
It went on to say that the time given for answering questions during the exam had been cut accordingly. As a result, the papers with a duration of 3 hours will only have 2.30 hours to complete the questions. Similarly, subjects with durations of 2.30 hours and 2.00 hrs would have only 2.10 hrs and 1.40 hrs to attempt questions during the examination, according to the directive.
“In case of subjects having practical portion in respect of Classes 11th & 12th the external assessment shall be conducted before the start of theory examination and in this regard notification shall be issued separately,” the BOSE order read.
In addition, the candidate can attempt any number of questions worth 70% of the total marks on the question paper. According to the order, students can attempt questions from any section of their choice and are not obligated to do so from a certain section.
” The questions having internal choice will not be considered two separate questions. The students shall have to attempt only one of the questions. Subjects like Physics, Chemistry etc that have a practical component of 30 marks and theory question paper of 70 marks, the students shall attempt 49 marks of theory (70% of 70 marks only), which will be raised to 100% i.e. 70 marks,” it further added.
In the event of Multiple Choice Type Questions, the order stated that each MCQ attempted by the contestant will be marked separately. In the case of language subjects, the same rule applies to the Grammar section. For example, a candidate who attempts three MCQs out of ten will be given a score of three out of three instead of ten.
The ruling went on to say that in language papers, such as General English, where the Grammar section comprises of questions divided into parts/subparts with different types of items carrying one or half a mark each, the order should be followed. For these types of questions, each item under a part / sub-part must be examined individually, and total attemptation must be calculated based on the total number of things under various parts / sub parts that the candidate really attempted. Furthermore, only in circumstances where there are no sub parts will the entire Grammar piece and its weighting be examined separately.
The order/notification stated that students appearing in the 10th, 11th, and 12th Annual (Private)/ Bi-annual examination-2020-21, Kashmir Division/ Winter Zone areas of Jammu and UT of Ladakh, and Annual(Private)/ Bi-annual 2021 Summer Zone area of Jammu Division as a one-time measure, shall attempt only 60 percent marks from the question paper. Students who attempt fewer than 60% of the question paper will have their score raised accordingly.
Because private students are only required to attempt 60 percent of the questions rather than all, they receive a 40 percent discount. For students taking topics without a practical component, the question paper will be 100 points and the students would have to answer 60 questions. If a subject has both theory and practical components, the concession will only apply to the theory portion. The requirements for the practicals will be the same as before, according to the order.
