J&K Congress Leadership in New Delhi: New JKPCC President to be announced soon, Azad eyes on centerstage

Amid speculations of J&K assembly polls soon, top J&K leaders will meet with the party high command in New Delhi today.

Today in the nation’s capital, veteran politician Ghulam Nabi Azad is expected to take the centre stage of politics in the Union Territory during a vital meeting between the leaders of the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir and the party high command.

In pictures accessed by The Chenab Times, various J&K leaders, including GM Saroori, Waqar Rasool Wani, Abdul Majid Wani, and various leaders, can be seen standing with the Azad in the center.

Leading members of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) will meet with All India Congress Committee General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal and J&K in-charge Rajni Patil at 15 Gurudwara Rakabganj Road amid rumours that the assembly elections in J&K may take place soon.

“Along with the election of a new JKPCC president, a wider discussion on how to strengthen the party in Jammu and Kashmir will take place. The party high command will make the ultimate selection after considering the four names that have been submitted for the position “said Ghulam Nabi Monga, a prominent JKPCC leader.

Azad, a former Union Minister and Chief Minister of J&K, and prominent Congress leader Ambika Soni will also attend the gathering.

The meeting will also feature current JKPCC working president Raman Bhalla, previous JKPCC president Ghulam Ahmad Mir, who recently resigned from his position, former Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, former JKPCC vice-president Monga, as well as former ministers and MPs from J&K.

According to a party source, Azad would return to the scene in Jammu and Kashmir, where the Congress high leadership is expected to entrust him with the task of revitalising the party after it suffered from factionalism in the Union Territory.

Leaders from all the factions of the JKPCC will gather for the first time in more than three years at this meeting. Due to internal disputes, numerous Kashmiri leaders have recently missed party events.

“The senior-most party figure in J&K is Azad Saheb. He has a national appeal and he can connect with people in both Kashmir Valley and Jammu regions. Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are coming up, hence we need him to lead the party now more than ever “a senior JKPCC official stated.

According to sources, the meeting in New Delhi would continue to be focused on the party’s revival and the decision to choose a new JKPCC President, with Azad possibly receiving a “bigger role” in J&K.

Among the leaders who met with Venugopal and Patil on Tuesday were JKPCC working president Raman Bhalla, former Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, Balbir Singh, Mula Ram, Ravinder Sharma, Balwan Singh, Manohar Lal, Vikar Rasool, and Yogesh Sawhney.

Since the PDP-BJP alliance collapsed in 2018, leaving Jammu and Kashmir directly under the administration of the Union government, the state has been without an elected government.

In 2019, New Delhi divided J&K into two union territories and withdrew the state’s special status.

With its poorest showing in many years during the Panchayat and District Development Council elections, the Congress has had a string of setbacks in Jammu and Kashmir, going against the general trend of the country.
