After Lithium, GoI Plans Auction of Kishtwar’s Sapphire Mines

In the wake of the recent discovery of lithium reserves in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, the Government of India (GoI) is poised to conduct a scientific auction of Kishtwar’s Sapphire mines, aiming to boost the local economy and contribute to the growth of the region. The announcement was made by Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, during a visit to the area, as per news agency KNO.

The Lieutenant Governor expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the GoI for their support in conducting surveys and gemmological studies of the Sapphire mines. “Within the next year, we will be able to organize an auction of the Sapphire mines using scientific methods. This initiative will not only invigorate the local economy but also stand as a significant driver of growth for Jammu and Kashmir,” stated LG Sinha as quoted by KNO.

Earlier this year, the Union Government revealed the presence of 5.9 million tonnes of lithium reserves in Jammu and Kashmir, marking the first such discovery in the country. Lithium, a non-ferrous metal with vital applications in electric vehicle batteries and other industries, is expected to play a pivotal role in future technologies.

The Geological Survey of India (GSI), an affiliate of the Ministry of Mines, carried out a comprehensive mineral exploration project in Salal-Haimna areas of Reasi district. The project resulted in the estimation of an inferred resource of 5.9 million tonnes of lithium ore. The report detailing these findings was handed over to the Union Territory of J&K.

As per sources within the GoI, the auction of the newly discovered lithium reserves in Reasi is slated to commence by December.

During his visit, Lt Governor Sinha evaluated the facilities provided to Machail Mata pilgrims and held discussions with local residents. At Gulabgarh Paddar, he addressed representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and citizens alike. Speaking about the initiatives undertaken to enhance infrastructure and facilities for the Holy Machail Mata pilgrimage, Lt Governor Sinha reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to ensuring a seamless and secure pilgrimage experience for devotees.

The introduction of roadways, solar power facilities, and tented accommodations for pilgrims has led to a surge in visitors, with this year’s pilgrimage tally already surpassing the one-lakh mark.

Lt Governor Sinha also visited the Buddhist Gompa at Paddar, where he sought blessings and interacted with members of the Buddhist community.
