Mohd Sultan, the revered resident of Sultangarh Budhi in Tehsil Kahara, District Doda, breathed his last today at the remarkable age of 110. His passing marks the end of an era in the region, leaving behind a void that cannot be easily filled. Sultan’s legacy was deeply intertwined with the hamlet he called home, which was named in his honor decades ago due to his status as one of the oldest surviving individuals in the area.
Born to Abdul Rahim, Sultan’s life spanned over a century, allowing him to witness the transformation of his surroundings through the times of change. However, his limited participation in the democratic process is a point of critique. Despite his longevity, Sultan chose to exercise his right to vote only on six occasions in elections, raising questions about his engagement with civic responsibilities even in his advanced age.

In an interview conducted by The Chenab Times when he was 104 years old, Sultan recounted his experiences during the pivotal 1947 Indo-Pakistani War. At that time, he was reportedly 33 years old, and he offered valuable insights into the civil conflicts that unfolded in his locality during those tumultuous times. His firsthand accounts provided a unique perspective on the historical events that shaped the region.
Sultangarh’s nomenclature is a tribute to Mohd Sultan’s legacy, as he not only witnessed but also participated in shaping its history.
As the locals mourn the loss of an icon, it is also a time to ponder the multifaceted nature of Mohd Sultan’s life—a life that encompassed resilience, historical witness, and a candid discussion about civic participation.
In memory of Mohd Sultan (Age 110), 1913-2023.
