Navjot Sidhu, a leader of the Punjab Congress, was detained after leading a protest in Chandigarh against the deaths of eight people, including four farmers, in violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri area on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government has denied Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi permission to visit the state’s most violent district. Mr Channi’s chopper was allowed to land by the Punjab government today so that he could visit Lakhimpur Kheri. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, the Punjab Deputy Chief Minister, had previously been denied permission to land at the Lucknow airport.
Mr. Sidhu led a rally of Congress workers outside the Punjab Governor’s residence in Chandigarh, where they chanted anti-government slogans in protest of the new farm rules. He also requested that Union Minister of State Ajay Kumar Mishra’s son be arrested for allegedly driving a car over farmers protesting.
Mr Sidhu and the Congress workers were held by Chandigarh police.
