A complaint has been made against Israeli director Nadav Lapid for calling The Kashmir Files “propaganda and vulgar” by Delhi-based lawyer Vineet Jindal. The complaint comes amid massive backlash and criticism from many, including high-ranking Israeli officials.
In a tweet, lawyer Jindal claimed he had lodged a complaint with the Goa Police against Nadav Lapid for “abusing Hindu community sacrifice done in Kashmir” by describing the film as vulgar and propaganda.
“The statement given by Nadav is totally manipulated and will ill intention towards the Hindu community in grub of targeting move The Kashmir Files…,” Jindal wrote in his complaint to Goa DGP Jaspal Singh.
The Kashmir Files, written and directed by Vivek Agnihotri, was described to as “propaganda” and “vulgar” by Nadav Lapid, the jury head of the 53rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI), on Monday. The movie shows the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from Kashmir after militants supported by Pakistan killed members of the community.
Lapid stated in his remarks at the IFFI 2022 closing ceremony that he was disturbed and shocked to see the movie being shown at the festival.
“The film “The Kashmir Files” disturbed and shocked us all. We thought it was a vulgar and propaganda film that had no place in the aesthetic competition of such a prominent film festival. I feel comfortable to openly share this feeling with you since the spirit of the festival can truly accept critical discussion which is essential for art and life,” Lapid said.
While some praised Lapid for “calling out propaganda,” others charged that despite being a member of a group that experienced the horrors of the Holocaust, Lapid was callous to the suffering of Kashmiri Pandits.
