The Union Joint Secretary of the Ministry of DoNER and Central Nodal Officer for Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA)-Catch the Rain (CTR), Sh. Angshuman Dey IFS, virtually chaired a review meeting today to evaluate the implementation and impact of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan in Doda district. The meeting focused on assessing the progress made so far and identifying any challenges or issues that need immediate attention.
During the meeting, District Development Commissioner Doda, Vishesh Mahajan, delivered a detailed presentation on the achievements of the past year and the proposed activities for the current financial year. Mahajan highlighted the Water Conservation Plan 2023-24 and informed the chair that 85 Amrit Sarovars were established last year. Additionally, it was proposed to create one Amrit Sarovar for every village in the district this year, taking into account the hilly terrain by developing terrace-type water bodies.
Furthermore, Mahajan shared that more than 10 lakh saplings were planted over an area of approximately 2869 acres last year. The district successfully restored 1021 water bodies with the assistance of various departments such as Rural Development, Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP), Jal Shakti, Horticulture, Agriculture, and Forest departments. This year, the district aims to restore an additional 792 water bodies. Notably, all 492 water bodies in the district have been geotagged.
The Jal Shakti Abhiyan, a flagship program of the Government of India, is designed to ensure water security and conservation throughout the nation. It promotes awareness regarding the significance of water conservation, encourages water harvesting, and aims to enhance infrastructure for water storage and distribution.
In response to the progress report, the Union Joint Secretary expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the district administration and stakeholders involved in implementing the Jal Shakti Abhiyan. He emphasized the need for continued dedication to ensuring the success of the program. The Joint Secretary highlighted the importance of active publicity through Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities. Furthermore, he announced his visit to the district during the last week of this month to discuss the progress, challenges, and issues that require immediate attention from the government to ensure the grand success of the JSA.
The review meeting was attended by several officials, including ADDC, SE JSD, CPO Doda, DIO Doda, DSWO Doda, CEO Doda, DFOs, Ex Ens, AEEs, and other concerned stakeholders.
As the government continues its efforts to promote water conservation and strengthen water security, the progress made in the implementation of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan in Doda district showcases the commitment of local authorities and the community in working towards a sustainable and water-secure future.
