The Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to consider lifting decades-old restrictions on Muharram processions in Srinagar. He stated that the authorities are serious about addressing the matter and have sought details from the Shia community about the scale of participation in the processions.
For many years, the authorities had imposed restrictions on Muharram processions along two specific routes in Srinagar, citing potential security concerns and other issues. However, recognizing the cultural and religious significance of the Muharram observance, the government has now taken a step forward in reevaluating the restrictions.
In a recent statement to the media in Srinagar, Divisional Commissioner Vijay Kumar Bidhuri disclosed that a series of meetings have been conducted to explore the possibility of lifting these restrictions. He emphasized the government’s genuine interest in finding a solution to this longstanding issue.
“We are committed to addressing the concerns surrounding the Muharram processions in Srinagar. The ball is currently in the court of the Shia community, as we have requested them to furnish details about the number of people who participate in the procession,” Bidhuri stated.
The authorities are closely cooperating with the Shia community, aiming to strike a balance between facilitating the observance of religious practices and ensuring public safety. By gathering data on the scale of participation, the government hopes to devise a well-informed plan that caters to the needs and sentiments of all stakeholders.
In addition to addressing the Muharram procession matter, Bidhuri also mentioned the ongoing progress of smart city projects in Srinagar. He expressed optimism that several projects would be completed before Independence Day.
