Pune Cantonment Board Halts Cemetery Shed Demolition Amidst Community Gathering

The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has temporarily suspended its decision to demolish a shed used for church services at the Christian Cemetery on Shankar Sheth Road, following a significant gathering of the Christian community at the site. The demolition was put on hold on Friday, April 17, 2026, as the PCB sought to avoid any potential law and order issues arising from the situation.

PCB Cites Crowd Control as Reason for Stay

According to PCB CEO Vidyadhar Pawar, the demolition team encountered a large crowd when they arrived at the cemetery. In light of this, the board decided to temporarily halt the demolition process. Police security had been requested for the operation, indicating the PCB’s awareness of the potential for public gathering and unrest.

The shed in question is reportedly used for various community activities, including prayers, spiritual gatherings, social service, de-addiction awareness programs, and counseling. Representatives from the Shiloh Church of Christ and the Regional Christian Society of Pune have submitted applications to the PCB, emphasizing the shed’s long-standing use for beneficial community activities over the past three decades.

Community Appeals for Reconsideration

Pastor Robin Mahadkar of Shiloh Church of Christ stated that the community has been in lawful possession of the property for 30 years and has been conducting activities for the welfare of the community. He further added that the proposed demolition would adversely affect these ongoing social and humanitarian initiatives. An application has been submitted to the PCB, urging them to reconsider the demolition order and grant a stay until legal formalities and a joint survey are completed.

The community representatives have also requested a hearing to present their case with supporting documents and urged the PCB to revise the demolition order concerning the church boundary points and structures. The notice for demolition, issued on March 23, was reportedly received by the church on April 13, a detail that has raised concerns about the timeline and communication.

Context of Cemetery Land and Previous Encroachments

The property in question is part of a historic cemetery land, measuring approximately 19 acres, which was originally handed over during the British era. Over time, several structures, including residences and a fire brigade office, are reported to have been built on this land due to encroachments. The current situation highlights a complex history of land use and development within the cantonment area.

This incident occurs amidst a broader context of demolition drives undertaken by the Pune Cantonment Board and the Pune Municipal Corporation against unauthorized constructions. Recent actions have targeted roadside stalls, illegal buildings, and various temporary structures across different parts of Pune. However, the community group has raised concerns that the demolition notice for the church shed appears to be selective, given the presence of larger, long-standing encroachments elsewhere on the cemetery land.

The PCB’s decision to halt the demolition demonstrates a cautious approach to managing public sentiment and community relations while addressing concerns about unauthorized structures. Further developments are expected as the PCB reviews the applications and documentation submitted by the religious and community groups.
