Jammu and Kashmir: Snowfall and Rain Lower Temperatures Across Valley

SRINAGAR, Apr 19: Fresh snowfall in the higher reaches of Kashmir and rain across the valley’s plains have led to a noticeable drop in temperatures, officials reported on Sunday.

The Chenab Times has learned that snowfall was recorded in the Tulail area of Gurez valley in Bandipora district. Similar conditions were observed on either side of the Zojila pass in the Sonamarg area of Ganderbal district, as well as along the Mughal road, which connects Shopian district to the Poonch-Rajouri region.

Light to moderate rainfall occurred in the plains of the valley during the early hours of Sunday. The Meteorological Department indicated that the weather is expected to improve later in the day.

The combined effect of the snowfall and rain has caused daytime temperatures to decrease by several degrees. Authorities have reported that several critical roads, including the Mughal road, the Srinagar-Kargil road, and the Bandipora-Gurez road, have been temporarily closed due to the accumulation of snow.

The recent weather activity marks a significant shift, bringing colder conditions to the region after a period of milder temperatures. The snowfall in higher altitudes is a common occurrence during this transitional season, impacting connectivity and local life. The rain in the plains, while contributing to the temperature drop, also serves to replenish water sources.

The closure of key routes like the Mughal road and the Srinagar-Kargil road can lead to disruptions in the movement of essential supplies and affect transportation for residents and travelers. Officials from the MET Department are monitoring the situation closely, with expectations of clearing skies and a return to more stable weather patterns by the end of the day.

The impact of this weather system extends beyond just temperature fluctuations. The precipitation is vital for the region’s agriculture and water management, particularly as the summer months approach. However, the immediate concern for authorities remains the restoration of connectivity and ensuring the safety of those in affected areas.

The valley has experienced this seasonal variation in weather, with higher elevations receiving snow while lower areas witness rainfall. This contrast in precipitation is characteristic of Kashmir’s diverse topography and its susceptibility to weather changes throughout the year. The Meteorological Department’s forecast suggests a temporary reprieve from the current conditions, but continued monitoring will be essential for managing the aftermath of the snowfall and rainfall.
