The digital-first phase of Census 2027, known as self-enumeration, commenced across the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) wards on Friday, with residents encouraged to log in and provide their household details. Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu was among the first to complete the exercise, highlighting its importance for future planning.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Sandhu, in a post on X, officially announced the commencement of the self-enumeration process across all MCD wards. He implored residents to actively participate in the initiative, emphasizing that their engagement plays a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of the city and the nation.
The digital platform empowers citizens to directly submit their household information, ensuring an accurate count of every resident. Officials stated that reliable data is fundamental to fostering inclusive governance and building a stronger, more developed nation. This digital approach aims to streamline the census process and enhance data accuracy by enabling citizens to take the lead in providing their information.
Prior to the MCD-wide launch, the self-enumeration exercise had already been completed in the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Delhi Cantonment areas. In these localities, houselisting and housing operations are currently being conducted through door-to-door visits by trained census enumerators. This preparatory phase ensures that all areas are covered systematically.
All individuals residing within MCD wards are eligible to partake in the voluntary self-enumeration process, irrespective of their domicile status. The process involves logging onto the official Census portal. The portal is designed to be user-friendly, requiring a single login per household. The head of the family or any designated member can undertake the enumeration using a valid mobile number. It is important to note that the language selected during the initial login cannot be altered later, necessitating careful selection by the user.
A significant aspect of the online self-enumeration is the requirement for respondents to provide the geo-coordinates of their residence. This can be achieved through several methods: selecting the location directly on a satellite map, searching for the address on the portal, or manually inputting the latitude and longitude. This feature aims to improve the spatial accuracy of the census data.
Upon successful submission of the details, an 11-digit self-enumeration ID will be generated. This unique ID will be essential for citizens to present to the census enumerators when they visit households for the subsequent Houselisting and Housing operations. These door-to-door enumerations are scheduled to take place from May 16 to June 14, forming the second major phase of the census data collection.
To facilitate the process and address any queries or issues residents might encounter, a toll-free helpline, designated as 1855, has been established. This helpline will provide assistance related to the census exercise, ensuring that participants have access to support throughout the enumeration period. The availability of a dedicated helpline aims to minimize potential difficulties and encourage maximum participation.
The self-enumeration portal has been made accessible in a total of 16 languages, including Hindi, English, Bengali, Tamil, and Urdu, reflecting the linguistic diversity of the national capital. The platform is equipped with built-in Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), tooltips, and validation checks designed to enhance the accuracy of the data being submitted. These features are intended to guide users and prevent common errors.
The self-enumeration phase for the MCD wards will continue until May 15. This period allows residents ample time to complete the online exercise before the commencement of the physical enumeration phase. The success of the Census 2027 hinges on the active and accurate participation of every resident, ensuring that the collected data accurately reflects the demographics and housing conditions of Delhi.
