Ganga Expressway Opens: Uttar Pradesh Offers 15 Days of Toll-Free Travel

LUCKNOW: Commuters traversing the newly inaugurated Ganga Expressway will enjoy toll-free travel for the first 15 days, announced Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This public-interest initiative aims to encourage ridership by allowing travelers to experience the expressway’s facilities without charge. The toll-free period will be effective until May 13, following the expressway’s opening on April 29, 2026.

The 594-kilometer expressway, connecting Meerut to Prayagraj, is Uttar Pradesh’s longest and has been developed under a public-private partnership model. The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) has directed the concessionaires, IRB Infrastructure and Adani Infrastructure, to defer toll collection during this period. The state government will compensate the construction companies for the revenue lost during these 15 days.

The objective behind the toll waiver is to familiarize the public with the world-class amenities and smooth travel experience offered by this new greenfield corridor. During this period, four-wheeler owners will not have to pay the estimated Rs 1,800 toll for the full journey between Meerut and Prayagraj, and similarly, no fees will be charged for travel within the 10 other districts the expressway passes through.

The Ganga Expressway, a significant infrastructure undertaking, was first proposed in 2007 and revived in 2019. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone on December 18, 2021, in Shahjahanpur, with construction commencing in April 2022. The project, built at an estimated cost of ₹36,230 crore, spans 594 kilometers and connects Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh to Prayagraj in the east. It is designed as a six-lane, access-controlled highway, expandable to eight lanes, with a speed limit of 120 kmph. The expressway is anticipated to reduce travel time between Meerut and Prayagraj from the current 10-12 hours to approximately six hours.

The development of the expressway involved major construction companies like Adani Enterprises and IRB Infrastructure Developers, operating under a Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer (DBFOT) model. The concessionaires have the right to collect user fees for the next 27 years, with the state government committed to compensating them for the toll revenue during the initial free period. Despite the toll waiver, all Operations & Maintenance (O&M) activities, including patrolling and emergency services, will continue as usual.

Beyond its role in improving connectivity, the Ganga Expressway is envisioned as a catalyst for economic growth. Integrated manufacturing and logistics corridors are planned along its alignment, aiming to enhance supply-chain efficiencies and attract industrial investment. The expressway also features a 3.5-kilometer emergency landing facility (airstrip) in Shahjahanpur district, designed for dual use and enhancing national security preparedness. Its strategic location and modern infrastructure are expected to boost logistics, support agriculture, generate employment, and contribute to the overall economic development of Uttar Pradesh.
