Authorities have rolled out a sophisticated new e-challan enforcement system around the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, aiming to curb traffic violations and enhance road safety. The initiative, a collaboration between Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) and the Delhi Traffic Police, utilizes advanced Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to monitor and penalize drivers for offenses such as speeding, illegal parking, and driving on the wrong side of the road.
New Surveillance Network Targets Traffic Violations
Information available with The Chenab Times indicates that the newly implemented system is equipped with high-definition ANPR cameras, with 14 already operational and plans underway to integrate an additional 35 cameras. These smart cameras are capable of automatically detecting a wide array of traffic violations, including overspeeding, triple riding, riding without helmets, jumping red lights, and stop-line infringements. The data captured by these cameras is processed through the National Informatics Centre (NIC) systems and subsequently verified by traffic police personnel before e-challans are issued to offenders.
The strategic placement of these cameras targets high-traffic zones within the airport vicinity. Key areas now under enhanced surveillance include Aerocity, the Central Spine Road, Rangpuri, the Centaur Hotel junction, the NSG junction, the Cargo Terminal area, and the Terminal 1 exit road. These locations were chosen due to their significant vehicular movement and the frequent occurrence of traffic rule breaches.
Technology-Driven Enforcement Aims for Greater Compliance
Officials state that the primary objective of this technological upgrade is to streamline traffic flow, particularly during peak travel hours, and to enforce road safety regulations more stringently. According to DCP Traffic Shobhit Saxena, this initiative represents a significant stride towards technology-driven enforcement in the national capital. He emphasized that the ANPR-based monitoring system is expected to increase transparency, minimize manual intervention, and ensure a more uniform application of traffic laws across the airport’s road network. The authorities anticipate a notable improvement in road discipline and a reduction in violations in this critical zone, which serves as a gateway to the city.
This deployment is part of a broader trend in Delhi towards leveraging technology for traffic management. Earlier this year, Delhi Traffic Police introduced speed guns to address violations like speeding and wrong-side driving. These handheld devices, capable of detecting multiple violations from a distance, are designed to be deployed randomly to deter drivers who may slow down only in the presence of fixed camera locations. Furthermore, the Delhi government has been exploring AI-powered camera systems for installation at traffic signals and entry points to the city, aiming to detect a comprehensive range of offenses, from signal jumping and speeding to overloading and driving without a valid pollution certificate.
The increasing reliance on technology for traffic enforcement reflects a nationwide push towards modernizing policing and administrative processes. These systems not only aid in identifying offenders but also contribute to data collection that can inform future traffic management strategies and infrastructure development. The goal is to create safer roads and more efficient transport networks by deterring violations through consistent and transparent enforcement, thereby reducing accidents and fatalities.
