Jammu and Kashmir CM Hints at Major Political Address Post-Eid

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has indicated that he is poised to deliver a significant political statement following the conclusion of Eid celebrations. Speaking at an event in Tangmarg, Abdullah conveyed a sense of restraint, suggesting that the timing and academic setting were not conducive for such remarks.

The Chenab Times has learned that Abdullah expressed his eagerness to speak more openly, stating, “Trust me, I want to burst like a cloudburst,” and promising to address a public gathering after Eid. He affirmed that he would then speak without reservation.

Turning to matters of governance and youth development, the Chief Minister emphasized the pivotal role of students in shaping the future of Jammu and Kashmir. He outlined the government’s commitment to enhancing educational, employment, and economic opportunities for the region’s youth.

Abdullah highlighted the current scarcity of adequate private universities, which necessitates students from Jammu and Kashmir pursuing higher education outside the region, incurring substantial financial burdens for their families. To address this, he revealed that the administration has enacted a Private University Bill, and the associated implementation rules are currently being formulated.

He conveyed optimism that the establishment of private universities across the region, potentially in areas like Tangmarg that offer favourable conditions, will provide much-needed local higher education options.

Regarding employment challenges, the Chief Minister acknowledged that government jobs alone cannot wholly resolve the issue of unemployment. Nevertheless, he stated that a target has been set to create between 20,000 and 25,000 government positions within the current year as a measure to alleviate the problem.

Furthermore, Abdullah drew attention to self-employment initiatives, such as Mission Yuva, designed to improve access to credit for young entrepreneurs involved in tourism and small-scale businesses. He also noted the expansion of skill development programs, aimed at equipping individuals with training that aligns with current market demands.

The overarching objective articulated by the Chief Minister is the cultivation of a self-reliant Jammu and Kashmir, fortified by robust local economic structures. This vision entails creating opportunities within the region to foster greater self-sufficiency and reduce long-term reliance on central government support.

“We want a day when we can stand on our own,” Abdullah stated, underscoring that persistent efforts in education, employment, and infrastructure development are crucial components in realizing this aspiration.
