Mumbai, India – A perplexing mystery continues to shroud the deaths of a family of four in Mumbai’s Pydhonie area, with authorities still seeking definitive answers nearly two weeks after the tragic incident. The family, comprising Abdullah Dokadia, his wife Nasreen, and their two daughters, Ayesha and Zainab, died within hours of each other on April 25, 2026. Initial suspicions pointed towards food poisoning, particularly after the family consumed watermelon late on the night of April 25th, following a dinner with relatives. However, subsequent investigations have cast doubt on this theory, leaving authorities puzzled.
Watermelon Theory Largely Ruled Out
The initial focus on watermelon as the cause of death has significantly weakened as forensic and laboratory tests have yielded no conclusive evidence of contamination or adulteration in the fruit. Reports from the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicated that samples of the watermelon, biryani, and other food items consumed by the family did not contain any harmful additives, artificial sweeteners, or colors. This finding has largely steered the investigation away from the fruit as the primary culprit.
Focus Shifts to Poisoning and Other Factors
As the watermelon theory falters, investigators are increasingly considering other possibilities, with poisoning emerging as a significant line of inquiry. Preliminary forensic findings have raised alarm bells, with sources indicating that certain organs of the victims, including the brain, heart, and intestines, exhibited an unusual green discoloration. Medical experts suggest this is not typical of standard food poisoning and could indicate exposure to toxic substances.
Adding another layer of complexity, traces of morphine, a potent painkiller, were reportedly detected in the body of Abdullah Dokadia. Authorities are actively investigating whether this is linked to prior medical treatment, accidental ingestion, or deliberate foul play. The police are awaiting further detailed forensic and histopathological reports, which are expected to provide crucial insights into the exact cause of death.
Investigation Underway, Suicide and Homicide Not Ruled Out
The Mumbai Police have registered a case of accidental death but have not ruled out the possibilities of suicide or homicide. As part of their comprehensive probe, the mobile phones of the deceased and other family members have been sent for forensic analysis to check for any deleted data or formatting prior to the deaths. Statements from the relatives who attended the dinner and consumed the same biryani, but remained unharmed, have also been recorded.
The family was not reportedly under any apparent financial strain, and personal diaries of the daughters did not indicate any family issues. While Abdullah had some kidney issues and Nasreen suffered from thyroid problems, these were not considered severe enough to warrant such extreme measures. The police are exploring all avenues, including reviewing bank statements and phone records, to ascertain if there were any underlying stressors or conflicts that could have led to the tragedy.
The investigation remains active, with authorities diligently working to piece together the events of that night and bring clarity to the mysterious demise of the Dokadia family.
