Six individuals remain missing after a boat carrying nine passengers capsized in the Yamuna River in Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh, on Wednesday evening. Three people were successfully rescued by the boatman following the incident. Search operations are currently being conducted by teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
Rescue Efforts Underway for Missing Individuals
The incident occurred in the Kutubpur Patiya hamlet, under the jurisdiction of Kurara police station, as the passengers were returning from a river island after purchasing cucumbers and muskmelons. According to initial reports, the boat lost balance and overturned around 7 p.m.
The boatman, identified as Dheeru, managed to rescue three passengers: Vishnu, Rinku, and Parul. However, the remaining six individuals, Akanksha (9), Rani (9), Brijrani (25), Labhyansh (5), Mahesh (6), and Aditya (11), are still unaccounted for. Two bodies, identified as Akanksha and Brijrani, were recovered by rescue teams on Thursday. Authorities have confirmed that five children and one woman were among the missing.
District Magistrate Abhishek Goyal stated that NDRF and SDRF teams are actively involved in the search for the missing persons. He added that local villagers and police personnel were among the first responders to the scene immediately after receiving information about the accident. The District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police are continuously monitoring the relief and rescue operations.
Government Response and Future Measures
Chief Minister Adityanath has directed the district administration to investigate the cause of the accident and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. He has instructed senior police and administrative officials to reach the spot immediately and ensure that relief and rescue operations are conducted with utmost urgency. The Chief Minister emphasized that any negligence in the matter would not be tolerated and urged for intensified efforts to locate the missing individuals as soon as possible. He also directed senior district officials to personally oversee the rescue operations and provide all possible assistance to the affected families.
Manoj Prajapati, the BJP MLA from Hamirpur, assured that compensation would be provided to the affected families in accordance with established rules and that a detailed report on the incident would be submitted to the Chief Minister. The passengers were reportedly returning from a routine trip that had been delayed, and the boatman indicated that the vessel submerged on its own rather than capsizing.
