Two individuals have lost their lives in separate road incidents in Delhi while returning home after watching Indian Premier League (IPL) matches, police reports indicate. The recent fatalities underscore the risks associated with late-night travel after sporting events.
Two Killed Near Bhajanpura Metro Station
In one incident, two friends, identified as Rohit (31) and Hemant (33), both residents of Karawal Nagar, were killed when their motorcycle was struck by a speeding car near the Bhajanpura Metro Station in Northeast Delhi. The accident occurred on Friday night, May 9, 2026. According to reports, a Maruti Celerio allegedly rammed their Bullet motorcycle from behind, causing critical injuries. Emergency services transported the duo to JPC Hospital, where they were pronounced dead upon arrival. The driver of the car, Himanshu (27), has been arrested, and the vehicle involved has been seized. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Khajuri Khas police station. Forensic experts examined the accident site as investigations continue.
Cousins Killed in Hit-and-Run Incident
In a separate incident on April 27, 2026, two cousins, Yagya Bhatia (20) and Abhav Bhatia (14), also died while returning from an IPL match. They were riding a motorcycle in central Delhi’s Ashoka Road area when their vehicle was hit by a truck. The truck driver fled the scene, making it a hit-and-run case. The victims, both residents of Ashok Nagar, were students. Yagya was pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree, while Abhav was a school student. According to police, the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. when Abhav was on a phone call with his father, informing him of their imminent arrival home. The call was abruptly disconnected following the collision. The cousins were rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital but were declared dead on arrival. The police initiated a search for the offending vehicle by scanning CCTV footage from the vicinity. The truck was later recovered in the trans-Yamuna area. A case was registered against the driver under sections pertaining to rash driving and causing death by negligence, with efforts to apprehend the driver underway.
These incidents highlight the tragic consequences that can arise from late-night travel, particularly after attending crowded events. Authorities are investigating both cases to ascertain the full details and bring those responsible to justice.
