Four members of a family, including two children, were killed when the roof of an old rented house collapsed in Moratagi village of Almel taluk in Vijayapura district on Thursday night. The incident occurred due to heavy rain accompanied by strong winds that lashed the region, causing the structure to give way while the family slept.
Family Buried Under Debris
The deceased have been identified as Gurunath Badiger, 35, his wife Jyoti Badiger, 28, and their daughters Kalamma Badiger, 13, and Kirti Badiger, 9. According to preliminary information, the family had been temporarily residing in the old rented house while renovation work was being carried out on their own residence. The weakened roof of the rented accommodation could not withstand the impact of the severe weather, leading to the collapse. All four were trapped beneath the debris and died on the spot before any help could arrive.
Rescue Operations Underway
Personnel from the Sindagi Police Station and the fire and emergency services rushed to the spot soon after the incident. They launched rescue and recovery operations to retrieve the bodies from the collapsed structure, which was challenging due to the mud roof and the accumulation of soil. Local residents also joined hands in clearing the debris. The tragic loss of the entire family has cast a pall of gloom over Moratagi village, with grieving relatives and villagers gathering at the scene.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the region had experienced intense rainfall on Wednesday night. The incident highlights the vulnerability of older structures to extreme weather conditions, particularly in areas prone to heavy monsoonal rains. Local authorities have registered a case and are conducting further investigations into the matter to determine the exact cause of the collapse.
