RAJOURI, May 16: A tragic incident unfolded in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district where one person died and seven others, including children, were hospitalised after consuming a wild vegetable suspected to be poisonous. The incident occurred in Mohra village within the Kotranka subdivision.
The Chenab Times has learned that members of two families ingested the wild vegetable on Friday evening, subsequently developing symptoms of food poisoning. They were initially taken to the Community Health Centre in Kandi before being transferred to the Government Medical College Hospital Rajouri for advanced medical care.
Authorities confirmed that an elderly man, identified as Mohammad Hussain, aged 60, succumbed to the poisoning while undergoing treatment. The remaining seven individuals, who are mostly children, are currently under medical observation at the hospital. Medical professionals indicated that preliminary assessments point towards food poisoning as the cause.
An official investigation has been launched to ascertain the precise nature of the wild vegetable and the exact circumstances leading to the fatalities and hospitalisations. The local administration is working to identify the specific plant species responsible and to issue advisories to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The incident highlights the potential dangers associated with foraging for wild edibles without proper identification, especially in regions with diverse flora. Local authorities are expected to release further details as the investigation progresses and toxicology reports become available. The community has expressed deep concern over the incident, with an emphasis on raising awareness about safe food practices.
Further updates are anticipated as medical teams continue to monitor the condition of the affected individuals and the investigation into the cause of poisoning proceeds. The focus remains on providing the best possible care for those hospitalised and understanding the root cause to prevent recurrence.
