SRINAGAR: The Union Territory Administration of Ladakh has officially postponed the holiday for Eid-ul-Azha, commonly known as Bakrid, by one day. The holiday, initially slated for May 27, 2026, will now be observed on May 28, 2026.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that an order was issued by the General Administration Department of the Ladakh Administration. This revision marks a partial modification to a government notification that was originally released in November 2025, which had set the holiday for May 27.
The decision impacts all government offices, educational institutions, and public sector establishments within the Union Territory. These entities are now instructed to adhere to the revised holiday date of May 28 for the observance of Eid-ul-Azha.
Eid-ul-Azha is an Islamic festival commemorating the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of obedience to God. The festival is celebrated by Muslims worldwide and involves the customary sacrifice of an animal, with the meat then distributed among family, friends, and the needy. The observance of holidays related to significant religious festivals is a common practice across various administrations to allow citizens to participate in religious and community gatherings.
The rescheduling of the holiday by the Ladakh Administration is a procedural adjustment to align with specific logistical or calendrical considerations that have arisen since the initial notification. Such adjustments are standard practice for administrative bodies when unforeseen circumstances or updated information necessitate a change in scheduled public holidays. The General Administration Department is responsible for issuing and disseminating such official directives to ensure smooth functioning of public services and observance of important dates.
