Maharashtra State Transport Corporation Urges Drivers to Conserve Fuel Amid Rising Diesel Costs

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has initiated a statewide campaign to encourage its drivers to adopt more fuel-efficient driving practices in response to escalating diesel prices. This initiative, aimed at reducing operational costs, includes incentives for drivers and depots that demonstrate improved fuel economy.

Fuel Conservation Drive Launched Across Maharashtra

In a bid to mitigate the financial strain caused by rising fuel costs, the MSRTC has launched a campaign titled “Fuel Saving Means Fuel Creation.” This program encourages drivers to practice smarter braking, minimize idling, and maintain optimal speeds to enhance fuel efficiency. The corporation aims to achieve substantial savings by promoting these driving techniques across its extensive fleet operating throughout Maharashtra.

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the MSRTC consumes an average of 10.87 lakh litres of diesel daily, making fuel a significant recurring expense. The rising cost of diesel has placed considerable pressure on the corporation’s finances, prompting the need for immediate conservation measures.

Incentives for Fuel Efficiency

Under the new campaign, depots will be assigned specific fuel-saving targets, and drivers who achieve superior kilometres-per-litre (KPL) performance will be eligible for financial rewards and public recognition. This incentive-based approach is designed to motivate drivers and depot staff to actively participate in the fuel conservation efforts.

The transport minister and MSRTC Chairman, Pratap Sarnaik, highlighted that even minor reductions in fuel consumption can lead to significant overall savings. He stated that if each depot could save just five litres of diesel daily, the corporation could collectively save approximately 1,000 litres per day, translating into substantial financial savings at current fuel prices. This initiative is expected to foster financial discipline within the organization, contributing to its long-term financial strength.

Measures to Improve Fuel Efficiency

Divisional controllers and depot managers have been instructed to set depot-wise fuel conservation targets and to continuously monitor diesel consumption. Officials are also tasked with identifying and implementing measures to improve overall fuel efficiency across all MSRTC operations. The campaign emphasizes that efficient driving practices not only reduce fuel costs but also contribute to the longevity of the vehicles and a decrease in maintenance requirements.

Recent reports indicate that the MSRTC is exploring various avenues to improve its financial standing, including enhanced diesel procurement processes that have reportedly secured significant annual savings. Furthermore, the corporation is diversifying revenue streams through advertising and plans for commercial fuel stations, alongside exploring renewable energy solutions like rooftop solar projects.

Financial Context and Potential Fare Hikes

The MSRTC has been facing considerable financial challenges, with reports of substantial cumulative losses. The ongoing increase in diesel prices has exacerbated this situation, leading to discussions about a potential fare hike. While a fare increase is under consideration, no immediate decision has been made, and the proposal is subject to approval from the State Transport Authority.

The corporation is examining multiple strategies to manage its financial burden, including stringent cost control measures and exploring wider deployment of electric buses. These efforts are aimed at ensuring the continued provision of essential public transport services, particularly for passengers in rural areas, while navigating the economic pressures posed by fluctuating fuel costs.
