SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday issued a clarification stating that Dachigam National Park remains accessible to visitors and that no restrictions have been imposed on entry. The statement aimed to counter circulating reports that suggested the popular national park had been closed.
The Chenab Times has learned that the official clarification was released to address specific claims circulating on June 3 regarding the closure of the park. The government explicitly stated that entry for all visitors to Dachigam National Park continues to be permitted under the usual procedures. The statement emphasized that no governmental restrictions have been put in place concerning entry into the park for the specified date.
Authorities urged the public to disregard any unverified information and advised prospective visitors to adhere to the standard protocols established for gaining entry into the national park. The directive aims to ensure clarity and prevent misinformation from deterring potential visitors.
The clarification comes in the wake of reports suggesting that the park was inaccessible due to a meeting scheduled to be held by the then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah with legislators from the National Conference and independent MLAs who supported the governing coalition. These reports had created confusion about the accessibility of the park for the general public and tourists.
Dachigam National Park, situated in the Zabarwan Range of the Himalayas, is renowned for its diverse flora and fauna, including the rare Kashmir stag (Hangul). It is a significant ecological and tourist destination in the region. The park spans an area of approximately 141 square kilometers and is divided into two sections: Upper Dachigam and Lower Dachigam. The primary objective of its establishment was to conserve the Hangul, an endangered species of red deer endemic to Kashmir.
The park’s ecosystem is rich, featuring coniferous forests, alpine meadows, and a variety of water bodies, including the unique Marsar Lake, which serves as the primary water source for the park and its wildlife. The varied terrain and altitudes within the park support a wide array of wildlife, including various species of mammals, birds, and reptiles.
Conservation efforts at Dachigam National Park are crucial for protecting the Hangul population, which has faced significant threats over the years due to habitat loss and hunting. The park management implements various strategies to monitor and protect the species, including anti-poaching patrols and habitat management initiatives.
The Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department, along with wildlife conservation organizations, actively works to maintain the ecological integrity of the park and ensure the survival of its inhabitants. Access to the park is regulated to minimize human impact on the delicate ecosystem while allowing for controlled ecotourism. The standard protocols for entry typically involve obtaining necessary permits and adhering to guidelines set by the park authorities to ensure the safety of visitors and the preservation of the natural environment.
The government’s prompt clarification underscores the importance of accurate information dissemination, especially concerning protected natural areas that are vital for biodiversity and tourism in the region.
