SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) has announced plans to stage a protest in New Delhi on the opening day of the Parliament’s Monsoon Session, demanding the immediate restoration of the region’s statehood and constitutional guarantees. The decision was made during a significant meeting of the NC legislature party, which included MLAs and allied members, held at Dachigam National Park. The meeting reviewed various political and governance issues, with a strong emphasis on the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.
Tanvir Sadiq, chief spokesperson for the NC, stated that the party will travel to the national capital to press its demands. He described statehood as a long-standing demand and believes the current juncture is appropriate for raising the issue at the national level, especially in light of developments since 2019. The meeting also deliberated on critical issues affecting the Jammu, Kashmir, Pir Panjal, and Chenab regions, including drug abuse, alcohol consumption, and developmental challenges.
The announcement comes amidst a period of political activity where the NC has been vocal about the perceived erosion of Jammu and Kashmir’s autonomy. Party leaders have consistently highlighted the importance of restoring statehood, a sentiment echoed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who has reportedly engaged with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the matter multiple times. The NC’s strategy involves a peaceful protest within the constitutional framework, aiming to remind both Houses of Parliament of the commitments made regarding the restoration of statehood.
The party leadership has expressed confidence that the proposed protest will be a collective effort representing the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Sadiq also criticized opposition parties, accusing them of engaging in political point-scoring and attempting to politicize every move made by the government. He specifically questioned the public release of correspondence on social media, suggesting it indicated a politically motivated agenda rather than a genuine desire for dialogue. The NC has maintained that its actions are transparent and driven by the mandate of the people, aiming to reclaim rights that were taken away in 2019.
During the Dachigam meeting, various public issues were discussed, including reservations, alcohol and drug abuse, and youth-related problems. The party resolved to intensify its campaign for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional and democratic rights, emphasizing that statehood is a right and not a favor. The NC leadership reiterated its commitment to pursuing the issue through democratic and constitutional means, planning to engage with leaders from various political parties to build support.
Tanvir Sadiq, also an MLA from Zadibal, has been a prominent voice in articulating the party’s stance on statehood and criticizing opposition parties. He has previously spoken out against what he termed as misinformation campaigns and baseless allegations from certain political groups, asserting the National Conference’s role as a defender of the region’s rights, identity, and dignity.
