Delhi Police have apprehended a couple in connection with the murder of a 49-year-old Delhi University professor, whose body was discovered in her Vasundhara Enclave apartment on Thursday. The arrests followed a three-day manhunt by law enforcement agencies.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the couple is undergoing detailed interrogation to ascertain the precise circumstances leading to the fatal incident. The victim, identified as Devosmita Paul, a 42-year-old assistant professor of English literature at a Delhi University college, was found deceased in her residence. Her sister, Devarati Paul, reported the incident to the police on Thursday.
According to police statements, a PCR call was received around 2:35 pm on Thursday from Devarati Paul, who expressed concern about her sister. She informed authorities that her sister, Devosmita Paul, resided alone in the flat located at Satyam Apartment, Vasundhara Enclave. Devarati Paul stated that the apartment had been locked from the outside since the morning, and Devosmita had not responded to numerous phone calls. Growing suspicious, she forced entry into the flat and discovered her sister lying unresponsive.
The crime scene unit was immediately dispatched to the location, conducting a thorough inspection. Forensic samples and relevant exhibits were collected after the scene was photographed and videographed. Police observed visible injury marks on Devosmita Paul’s head, suggesting she may have been struck with a heavy object. Preliminary investigations point towards a property dispute as a potential motive, although further details are still being processed.
Following the discovery, the victim’s body was transferred to LBS Hospital for preservation and post-mortem examination. A case has been registered at the New Ashok Nagar police station under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Multiple police teams were constituted to track down and apprehend the individuals responsible for the professor’s death.
Further investigation revealed that the deceased had been separated from her husband, who resides in Bengaluru, and was living alone in the Delhi apartment. The absence of any signs of forced entry led investigators to suspect that the victim likely knew her assailant(s).
CCTV footage from the vicinity was meticulously examined, which revealed two masked individuals entering the apartment complex on the day of the incident. These individuals reportedly remained within the complex for approximately 30 minutes. The footage captured a cab entering the residential complex, from which two masked individuals carrying a bag disembarked. They proceeded to the apartment by using the stairs, bypassing the lift. The cab driver remained in the vehicle during this period.
Approximately 30 minutes later, the same two suspects were observed exiting the building and departed in the same cab. Law enforcement authorities managed to trace the vehicle using its registration number, leading to the detention of the cab driver for questioning. Initial reports suggest the murder occurred between 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm on Wednesday. Devosmita Paul’s last known communication was a phone call to her mother around 1:00 pm. Her mother arrived at the apartment later that evening, around 6:00 pm, and received no response upon knocking.
The initial suspect pool comprised around 200 individuals, which was subsequently narrowed down to 13 persons of interest as the investigation progressed. The police are working to piece together the sequence of events leading to the professor’s untimely death.
