Indore, India – A significant five-day meeting of the BRICS grouping commenced in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, focusing on critical issues of food security, smart farming practices, global agricultural trade, and the welfare of farmers.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the discussions, held under India’s presidency of the bloc, began with a three-day agriculture working group meeting from June 9, followed by a two-day BRICS ministerial meeting scheduled from June 12. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced the commencement of the deliberations on Monday.
BRICS, an intergovernmental organization, represents eleven major emerging economies including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia. Minister Chouhan emphasized the substantial global influence of the BRICS nations, noting that they collectively house approximately half of the world’s population. These countries also possess 42% of the global agricultural land and contribute over 42% to global agricultural produce. Furthermore, out of 580 million farmers worldwide, a significant 70% are small cultivators residing within BRICS nations.
The five-day gathering is set to engage in comprehensive deliberations covering food security, farmer welfare, nutritional standards, and the adoption of climate-resilient smart agriculture techniques. Participants are also expected to discuss the facilitation of international agricultural trade, the optimization of supply chains, the integration of digital agriculture, advancements in research, knowledge exchange, and the application of artificial intelligence and robotics in the agricultural sector.
Following consensus among the BRICS agriculture ministers, a joint declaration is anticipated to be issued. This meeting marks a significant period for India’s engagement with the BRICS bloc, with the country having previously presided over BRICS meetings in 2012, 2016, and 2021. Minister Chouhan had previously stated in Indore that the meeting, held under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, presents a historic opportunity for the global agriculture sector, aiming to provide a new direction for international agricultural strategies.
The timing of the conference in Madhya Pradesh’s financial capital holds added significance, as the state government has declared 2026 as the ‘Agriculture Welfare Year,’ underscoring a regional commitment to agricultural development and reform.
