The Delhi government has mandated a comprehensive safety inspection of coaching centres across the national capital, directing multiple agencies to conduct a rigorous drive in major coaching hubs. The move aims to address infrastructural deficiencies and ensure student safety amidst growing concerns over regulatory compliance.
Massive Inspection Drive Launched
According to details received by The Chenab Times, Delhi’s Education Minister, Ashish Sood, chaired a review meeting on Wednesday where he emphasized that student safety and welfare are paramount. Senior officials from various government departments, including the Home Department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Urban Development Department, Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), and the Directorate of Higher Education, were present.
Minister Sood expressed significant concern regarding existing infrastructural shortcomings and safety lapses observed in numerous coaching institutes. He stated unequivocally that any negligence impacting student safety would not be tolerated and stressed the imperative for all coaching institutions to strictly adhere to the safety norms and guidelines established by the government and judicial pronouncements.
Focus on Fire Safety and Regulatory Compliance
The review meeting specifically addressed critical areas such as fire safety measures, regulatory loopholes, student welfare issues, and allegations of unfair commercial practices employed by some coaching centres. In a bid to implement immediate enforcement actions, Minister Sood instructed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), MCD, Delhi Fire Service, and DDMA to undertake special inspections in prominent coaching clusters, including Mukherjee Nagar, Rajender Nagar, and Katwaria Sarai.
These inspection teams are tasked with verifying the compliance of coaching centres with fire safety norms, building regulations, and all other mandatory safety requirements. To facilitate a coordinated and effective enforcement strategy, the MCD has been directed to furnish the inspection teams with a detailed list of 923 coaching centres that have already been surveyed across Delhi.
Strict Action Against Violators
Furthermore, the minister directed all relevant departments, encompassing the Delhi Fire Service and Delhi Police, to initiate stringent action against any institution found to be in violation of safety standards or operating in contravention of established regulations. In an effort to enhance oversight, the MCD is required to submit a daily Action Taken Report (ATR) detailing the enforcement and compliance measures to the Minister’s Office.
The Directorate of Higher Education is reportedly developing a comprehensive regulatory framework for coaching institutes. This proposed policy aims to systematically address existing gaps, bolster accountability, elevate safety standards, and establish a transparent regulatory mechanism for all coaching centres operating within Delhi. The draft framework is anticipated to be presented to the government in the near future.
Government’s Commitment to Student Safety
Minister Sood reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests and futures of students. He warned that institutions found to be endangering lives through negligence would face severe repercussions. The Minister affirmed, “The Delhi Government is fully committed to safeguarding the interests and future of students. No institution will be allowed to compromise with student safety. Those violating prescribed norms will face strict and decisive action.”
This significant crackdown by the Delhi Government comes at a time when authorities are looking to bolster safety compliance and accountability within the rapidly expanding coaching institute sector, which serves as a critical preparatory ground for thousands of students appearing for competitive examinations annually.
