SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir administration has ordered the immediate withdrawal of a book from government school libraries following widespread objections to its content. An inquiry has also been initiated to investigate the circumstances under which the publication was approved and distributed to educational institutions across the Union Territory.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the School Education Department took the decisive action after receiving numerous complaints alleging that the book contained references deemed inappropriate and objectionable for students. The department subsequently directed the recall of all copies from government schools and ensured their removal from library shelves.
Inquiry into Approval Process
The government has launched departmental proceedings to identify the officials responsible for the selection, approval, procurement, and circulation of the book. Sources indicated that accountability will be established based on the findings of the ongoing inquiry.
The publication in question, titled “Great Personalities and Legends,” was distributed to government schools under the umbrella of the Samagra Shiksha scheme. The book was officially recalled on July 3, just weeks after its supply in June, following the emergence of the complaints.
Political Controversy Erupts
The controversy intensified after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) voiced strong objections, alleging that the book presented separatist leaders and individuals associated with militancy in a favourable light. Sunil Sharma, the Leader of Opposition, called for the immediate withdrawal of the book, a high-level investigation into the matter, and stringent action against those found responsible for its inclusion in school libraries.
Earlier, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated that he had no prior knowledge of the book and would refrain from making any comments until he had reviewed its contents himself. The administration’s swift action aims to address the concerns raised by political parties and the public regarding the educational material being provided to students.
