Mumbai Suburban Railways Augments Capacity with 10 New 15-Car Services

Mumbai’s bustling suburban railway network is set to enhance its passenger carrying capacity with the introduction of ten new 15-car services by Central Railway, effective July 20. This strategic move involves converting existing 12-car trains into longer 15-car rakes, a measure designed to alleviate overcrowding and improve commuter comfort on one of India’s busiest transit systems.

Increased Capacity and Commuter Benefits

The addition of these ten services will raise the total number of 15-car services operating on the Central Railway network to 32. According to Dr. Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Central Railway, the upgrade of three additional coaches per service will boost the carrying capacity of each train by approximately 25 percent. These new services are slated to operate on the Central Railway’s Main Line, specifically on routes connecting CSMT to Karjat and its South East line, benefiting passengers traveling to and from Ambarnath, Badlapur, and Karjat. The conversion of 12-car trains to 15-car rakes is not about introducing entirely new services but rather optimizing existing ones to accommodate more passengers without significantly altering the timetable. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by Central Railway to manage the high volume of daily commuters effectively.

Information available with The Chenab Times indicates that these upgraded services aim to improve passenger distribution and provide greater comfort for daily commuters utilizing the heavily trafficked Central Railway network. The move is particularly significant in light of the persistent issue of overcrowding, which has been a long-standing challenge for Mumbai’s local trains. By increasing the length of the trains, Central Railway anticipates a more balanced distribution of passengers, thereby reducing the strain during peak hours.

Infrastructure and Future Plans

The introduction of 15-car services necessitates corresponding infrastructure upgrades. Central Railway has been undertaking platform extension work at various stations along its corridors to accommodate the longer trains. Projects have included extending platforms at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to allow more 15-car trains to operate. These platform extensions are crucial for the successful deployment of longer rakes, ensuring safety and operational efficiency. Beyond the immediate introduction of these ten services, Central Railway has ambitious plans for further expansion of its 15-car train operations. According to past blueprints, Phase I of these plans targeted the Karjat corridor, serving suburbs like Ambernath and Badlapur, while Phase II was intended to extend capacity on the Kasara line. Stations beyond Thane, such as Dombivli and Kalyan, can currently handle longer trains, and expanding infrastructure aims to benefit more suburban hubs.

The railway authorities have clarified that these upgrades do not involve the introduction of new train paths but rather an enhancement of existing services. This approach allows for a significant capacity boost without the extensive timelines and complexities associated with building new lines or overhauling signaling systems. Central Railway’s strategy focuses on maximizing existing assets through practical engineering solutions to address daily crowding, running in parallel with larger projects like metro expansions.

In addition to the increase in 15-car services, Indian Railways is also looking at procuring new train rakes to replace older ones and support increased services. Over the past years, there have been ongoing efforts to enhance passenger safety and comfort, including plans for air-conditioned (AC) local trains and non-AC locals with automatic doors. These broader initiatives underscore a commitment to modernizing Mumbai’s suburban rail network to meet the growing demands of its millions of daily commuters.
