Jammu and Kashmir Faces Major Power Shortage as Baglihar, Salal Hydro Projects Shut Down

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir is bracing for significant power disruptions in the coming days due to the simultaneous shutdown of two crucial hydroelectric projects, the Baglihar Hydroelectric Project (HEP) and the Salal Hydroelectric Project. The Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) issued an advisory warning of potential curtailments as a substantial power deficit looms over the Union Territory.

The Chenab Times has learned that the Baglihar HEP is scheduled for a complete shutdown commencing Sunday night for flushing operations, expected to last between four to five days. The project’s power generation will be progressively reduced from Sunday afternoon, with a full plant closure anticipated by early evening. This planned shutdown exacerbates an already strained power situation, as the Salal Hydroelectric Project has been offline since July 18 for its own 10-day maintenance period.

Officials estimate that the concurrent closure of these two major power sources will result in a deficit of approximately 1,000 megawatts across Jammu and Kashmir. This shortfall is particularly critical during the peak summer demand, a period when the region heavily relies on the electricity generated by Baglihar and Salal to meet its needs. The power utility is actively exploring options to mitigate the impact of this deficit.

Efforts are underway to secure additional electricity through short-term purchases from the national power exchange. However, the KPDCL cautioned that any residual shortfall might necessitate implementing forced power curtailments across the Union Territory. The corporation has appealed to consumers to exercise restraint in their electricity usage and to cooperate with the authorities during this period of reduced generation.

The Baglihar Dam, located on the Chenab River in the Doda district, is a significant contributor to the region’s power grid. Similarly, the Salal Dam, also situated on the Chenab River in the Reasi district, plays a vital role in power supply. The planned maintenance and operational requirements for such large-scale hydroelectric facilities are essential for ensuring their long-term efficiency and safety, but their temporary closure inevitably creates challenges for power distribution companies managing demand.

The KPDCL’s advisory aims to inform the public about the impending power situation, urging consumers to prepare for potential interruptions. The corporation has stressed that normal power generation is expected to resume once the maintenance and operational procedures at both projects are completed. Until then, judicious use of electricity by all consumers will be crucial in managing the available supply and minimizing the extent of power curtailments.

The reliance on hydroelectric power in Jammu and Kashmir is substantial, given the region’s abundant water resources. Projects like Baglihar and Salal are key components of the energy infrastructure, contributing significantly to meeting the growing demand, especially during the summer months when air conditioning and other cooling devices increase consumption. The current situation underscores the challenges in maintaining a consistent power supply when multiple critical generation facilities are simultaneously offline for maintenance or operational reasons.

Further updates on the restoration of power generation from both the Baglihar and Salal projects will be provided by the KPDCL as they become available. The corporation remains committed to minimizing the impact of these unavoidable shutdowns on the public and restoring normal power supply at the earliest opportunity.
