Pune Traffic Congestion to See 30% Reduction with New Mega Road Projects, Claims Maharashtra CM

Pune, Maharashtra – Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced that significant infrastructure projects are underway in Pune, which are expected to reduce traffic congestion in the city by approximately 30 percent. The ambitious plans include the development of three elevated road projects, an Outer Ring Road, and a High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR).

Elevated Corridors to Ease Congestion

The Chief Minister stated that the foundation stones for three major elevated highway projects have been laid, marking a crucial step towards alleviating Pune’s persistent traffic woes. These projects aim to improve connectivity within the city and link key industrial areas, including those falling under the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

The Hadapsar-Yavat and Chakan-Shikrapur corridors are specifically designed to reduce travel time, potentially saving commuters around 50 minutes on each journey. The planning for these routes incorporates a modern, multi-tier approach, which may include ground-level roads, the Outer Ring Road, elevated corridors, and Metro routes integrated into a single framework. This integrated planning is also expected to reduce Metro construction costs by up to 40 percent.

The three elevated projects are the Pune-Shirur Elevated Highway (53.4 km), the Hadapsar-Yavat Elevated Highway (31.5 km), and the Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur Elevated Road (53.2 km). These projects, collectively spanning approximately 138.1 kilometers, are being executed by the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. The estimated cost for these three elevated corridors is around ₹18,000 crore.

The Hadapsar-Yavat elevated corridor, extending from Bhairoba Nala to Yavat, has seen its alignment revised and length extended to approximately 39 km, commonly referred to as a 36.5 km corridor. This project alone has a sanctioned cost of Rs 5,262 crore and is expected to take three years from the issuance of the work order for completion.

Ring Roads and HCMTR Projects

In addition to the elevated corridors, the development of an Outer Ring Road and an Inner Ring Road is progressing. The Outer Ring Road, spanning approximately 173 km, is targeted for completion within two years and is expected to contribute to the overall reduction in traffic congestion. The Inner Ring Road, managed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), covers a significant length and is in various stages of land acquisition and planning.

The 36-km High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) project is also slated to commence work in November. These infrastructure developments are part of a broader vision to transform Pune into one of the country’s most advanced cities by 2030, fostering it as a key growth hub.

Economic and Connectivity Impact

The infrastructure initiatives are projected to not only ease traffic but also generate significant revenue for the state government, with the three elevated projects alone expected to yield around ₹1,000 crore. Furthermore, the projects are designed to integrate with the city’s future Metro lines, a move anticipated to reduce construction costs and disruptions.

The government is also planning a double-tube tunnel through Dive Ghat to connect with the upcoming Purandar International Airport, enhancing accessibility to this crucial development. Over 50 percent of land acquisition for the airport has reportedly been completed. The road projects are being implemented under a design-build-finance-operate-transfer (DBFOT) model.

Future Vision for Pune

Chief Minister Fadnavis expressed confidence that Pune would be recognized as a leading modern city and a “Growth Engine” by 2030. He highlighted the state’s commitment to resolving Pune’s chronic traffic congestion through these large-scale infrastructure enhancements. The projects are expected to be completed within four years and are seen as crucial for Maharashtra’s aim to become a $1 trillion economy.

The planned infrastructure aims to improve connectivity to industrial belts such as Ranjangaon and Chakan, boost freight logistics, and provide long-term relief from congestion across the metropolitan area. The integration of Metro lines into the design of these elevated corridors is a key feature, ensuring that future public transport needs are accommodated without further disruption.
