SRINAGAR: Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma on Saturday launched a sharp critique against the then Jammu and Kashmir government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, alleging manipulation in sports quota appointments and accusing the administration of shielding individuals involved in the 2012 MBBS paper leak scam. Sharma, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), also stated he did not require validation from the Chief Minister.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Sharma expressed his stance, saying, “I don’t want a certificate from Omar Abdullah. I don’t want a personal fight with him. But he is from a royal family. He doesn’t like me being an LoP from a poor family. It is not his level. If he were a child of a poor family, then he would have liked it.”
The Leader of Opposition alleged widespread irregularities in governmental appointments, claiming that existing policies were altered to benefit a select few. Sharma highlighted that while 223 individuals were appointed under a constitutional provision for outstanding sportspersons after a considerable period, his grievance was not with the appointments themselves but with the alleged sidelining of deserving candidates.
Sharma further alleged that the policy was scrapped specifically to facilitate the appointment of favoured individuals, describing the situation as a potential large-scale scam and scandal that the BJP intended to expose. He contended that the policy modification enabled individuals with minimal educational qualifications, such as a matriculation pass, to secure positions like Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) or gazetted officer roles.
The opposition leader also revisited the 2012 MBBS admission scandal, directly implicating the Chief Minister at the time. Sharma asserted that the sale of MBBS seats, reportedly for substantial sums, occurred under Omar Abdullah’s watch. He further alleged that an individual involved in the scam was subsequently promoted, reappointed, and even appointed as a consultant by the government, stating that the Chief Minister could not evade responsibility for these actions. Sharma clarified that while J.P. Nadda had also spoken about the issue, the year cited was incorrect, specifying the incident occurred in 2012.
Sharma articulated that the issue transcended regional divisions within Jammu and Kashmir, describing it as a conflict where the children of ordinary families were overlooked in favour of those with influential connections. He reiterated his commitment to opposing violations of policy and favouritism within the administration.
Concluding his remarks, Sharma vowed to remain an uncompromising opposition voice, stating, “I will not praise the CM. I will not sing a song for him. I will raise my voice against the party on which they are sitting.”
