A Delhi court on Friday handed down life sentences to former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain and four other individuals for their involvement in the murder of Intelligence Bureau staffer Ankit Sharma. The killing occurred during the northeast Delhi riots in 2020.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh delivered the verdict, stating that while the prosecution had proven the murder, it failed to establish grounds for the convicts’ irreformability, thereby precluding the death penalty. The court convicted Hussain and his associates of murder earlier in the proceedings.
Ankit Sharma’s brother, Ankur Sharma, expressed a sense of justice for his family after a protracted legal battle spanning nearly six years. “After almost six years of fighting this case, our family finally feels that we have received a sense of justice,” Ankur Sharma told PTI. He described the journey as “long and painful,” acknowledging moments of doubt about the legal process but maintaining faith in the judicial system.
The verdict, he stated, offered “some relief” and a validation of their enduring struggle and perseverance. However, the family continues to grapple with the profound grief of losing Ankit, whose absence is felt acutely on significant occasions. “My brother was born on February 2, 1994. He would have turned 32 this year,” Ankur Sharma shared, highlighting the unfulfilled potential and lost moments that the court’s decision, while acknowledging the crime’s gravity, cannot restore.
Despite the partial resolution, Ankur Sharma indicated that the family’s legal recourse is not concluded. They intend to appeal to higher courts, seeking the case to be classified as “rarest of rare” and advocating for all convicted individuals to receive the maximum penalty. “Our fight is still not over,” he stated, emphasizing that only then would they feel complete justice has been served for Ankit and their family.
Conversely, Tahir Hussain, following the sentencing, declared his intention to challenge the verdict in the High Court. “Insaaf High Court se milega (Justice will come from the High Court),” he was quoted as saying while being escorted from the courtroom. He expressed confidence that the High Court would ultimately deliver justice.
The Delhi Police had initially sought the death penalty for all five convicts, arguing that the brutal nature of Sharma’s murder qualified it as falling within the “rarest of rare” category. Special Public Prosecutor Madhukar Pandey had presented arguments highlighting the lack of mercy shown to the victim during the assault.
The northeast Delhi riots, which erupted in February 2020, resulted in numerous deaths and widespread destruction of property. The violence, exacerbated by contentious political rhetoric surrounding the Citizenship Amendment Act, led to extensive investigations and numerous court cases. The murder of Ankit Sharma, an Intelligence Bureau employee, became a focal point of the legal proceedings, with his family actively pursuing justice.
The court’s decision to impose life imprisonment reflects a significant outcome in one of the most prominent cases stemming from the riots.
