A Delhi man has been apprehended for allegedly planting illegal firearms at his relative’s rented residence and then informing the police anonymously, in a bid to falsely implicate him in an Arms Act case. The accused, identified as Mohammad Waseem, 28, was arrested on Saturday.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Waseem harboured resentment towards his relative, Mohammad Ashraf, who had married Waseem’s sister-in-law against the family’s expressed wishes. During police interrogation, Waseem initially attempted to mislead investigators. However, he later confessed to the clandestine act of planting three country-made pistols at Ashraf’s rented accommodation in the Welcome area on separate occasions.
The police detailed Waseem’s elaborate scheme. Posing as an individual named “Arjun,” Waseem had previously alerted the authorities about weapons being hidden at Ashraf’s location. Acting on this tip-off, the police visited the premises and recovered a single country-made pistol on July 16, which led to the registration of an Arms Act case against Ashraf.
Following Waseem’s persistent assertions that more weapons were concealed within Ashraf’s house, the police conducted a subsequent search. This search resulted in the discovery of two additional country-made pistols. A fresh case under the Arms Act was subsequently registered against Ashraf following this second recovery.
However, police apprehended Waseem after gathering more substantial technical evidence that pointed towards his involvement. Waseem, who operates a mobile phone repair shop in the Sunder Nagri area of northeast Delhi, does not have any prior criminal record. Investigators are currently delving into the full extent of the conspiracy and examining the circumstances that led to Ashraf’s initial arrest after the first weapon was found.
