Satyabrata Sahoo, a senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1997 batch from the Tamil Nadu cadre, has been appointed as the Commissioner of Economics and Statistics. This appointment marks a new chapter in his distinguished career within the state’s administrative machinery.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that this is the latest in a series of significant postings for Sahoo, who has previously held crucial positions such as Secretary in the Water Resources Department and Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu. His tenure as Chief Electoral Officer saw him engage in numerous meetings with recognized national and state political parties to discuss election-related matters and the implementation of the model code of conduct.
During his time as Chief Electoral Officer, Sahoo was involved in discussions concerning electoral processes, monitoring of financial transactions, and addressing various concerns raised by political representatives. These meetings were instrumental in ensuring the smooth conduct of elections and upholding democratic principles.
The administrative reshuffling in Tamil Nadu has seen several key IAS officers change portfolios. In November 2024, Sahoo was transferred from his role as Chief Electoral Officer to serve as the Secretary for the Animal Husbandry, Dairying, Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Department. Prior to that, in May 2026, he was posted as the Secretary in the Water Resources Department, underscoring his versatility and the trust placed in him by the government to handle diverse administrative responsibilities.
Sahoo’s career trajectory includes significant tenures in various departments, demonstrating a broad range of experience. He has served as Principal Secretary in departments like Public (Elections) and Animal Husbandry, Dairying, Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare. His earlier roles included Assistant Collector, District Collector, and Additional Secretary, among others, highlighting a consistent progression through the ranks of the civil services.
