Ladakh’s first international-level artificial ice hockey rink was inaugurated at the NDS Stadium in Leh on Thursday. The facility, built at an estimated cost of Rs 42 crore, aims to provide players with a year-round training environment, overcoming the limitations of the region’s short natural ice season.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, formally opened the state-of-the-art rink. Equipped with a 24/7 chilling system, the stadium will enable ice hockey players to train consistently regardless of ambient weather conditions. Previously, athletes in Ladakh had access to natural ice for only two to three months annually, significantly restricting practice, tournament organization, and athlete preparation for higher-level competitions.
The new artificial rink is poised to enhance the quality and continuity of training for players, equipping them better for national and international sporting events. Lieutenant Governor Saxena highlighted the project as a substantial investment in the youth of Ladakh, with the potential to elevate the Union Territory’s status as a significant destination for winter sports.
“This 24/7 chilling facility will ensure that our young players no longer have to wait for winter to practise,” stated the Lieutenant Governor. He further elaborated that the year-round training regimen would provide the necessary continuity required for athletes to advance their skills and compete effectively at more demanding levels. The facility is also expected to play a crucial role in identifying and nurturing emerging ice hockey talent from Leh and other parts of Ladakh.
According to the Lieutenant Governor, the development is projected to foster opportunities for sports tourism within the region, thereby contributing to the local economy. He connected the project to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader vision of expanding high-quality sports infrastructure across India and solidifying the nation’s emergence as a global sporting powerhouse. This initiative specifically aims to enhance sporting capabilities in remote and border regions like Ladakh.
The inauguration marks a significant milestone for winter sports in Ladakh, offering a much-needed boost to athletes and sports enthusiasts. The facility is expected to not only improve player performance but also promote a healthier and more active lifestyle among the youth of the region, potentially leading to greater participation in organized sports.
