GANDERBAL, Aug 15: The Food Safety Department of Jammu and Kashmir has intensified its surveillance along the Amarnath Yatra routes, ensuring the quality and safety of food served to thousands of pilgrims undertaking the arduous journey.
The Chenab Times has learned that the department, operating under the Jammu and Kashmir Food and Drugs Administration, has deployed dedicated teams to key transit points and base camps, including Baltal and Pahalgam. These teams are actively inspecting langars and other food service providers to uphold stringent hygiene and safety standards.
Mobile Food Testing Vans have been strategically positioned to conduct on-the-spot assessments of food items and drinking water. Officials confirmed that daily checks are being carried out, focusing on critical aspects such as the storage of raw materials, preparation areas, utensil cleanliness, and the quality of water used in cooking and for consumption.
As of the latest reports, authorities have tested a significant number of food samples, with 576 samples analyzed and 354 langars inspected. Beyond testing, the department has also prioritized public awareness and training, organizing 144 awareness programs that reached over 1,200 individuals and conducting 103 training sessions specifically designed for food handlers and sewadars involved in the Yatra.
Expired, damaged, or substandard food products identified during these inspections are immediately confiscated and destroyed. The training initiatives emphasize basic hygiene practices and safe food handling techniques, including the mandatory use of masks, hairnets, and gloves to prevent cross-contamination.
Compliance with the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board’s food guidelines is also being rigorously monitored. These guidelines include specific restrictions on the consumption of excessive oil, salt, and sugar. Items such as heavy fried foods, carbonated beverages, and other prohibited items are strictly disallowed along the high-altitude pilgrimage routes.
A senior food safety officer stationed at the Baltal base camp stated, “Serving thousands of pilgrims at high altitudes requires absolute vigilance. Our goal is simple: ensure every pilgrim receives wholesome, safe food so they can complete their holy pilgrimage in good health.”
The comprehensive food inspection and sample testing operations are slated to continue throughout the entire duration of the Amarnath Yatra, underscoring the administration’s commitment to pilgrim welfare.
